While the addition of DeMarcus Cousins puts the Golden State Warriors at a Monstars from Space Jam type of level, some others believe this is nothing but a “rehab” stint that will allow him to get some hardware while he plays out a year before hitting the free agent market again in 2019.

Mike Fisher of 247 Sports said a source told him with no cynicism: “He’s going to the Warriors to rehab.”

Cousins is expected to be out until December or January after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury after 48 games with the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Warriors will closely monitor this injury before integrating him into the starting lineup, and while they likely won't need him to plow through the formality of the regular season, the goal is to use his playing time as an experimental jelling period, helping him find his niche with the team

Cousins could hit free agency as soon as the next offseason and cash in on the money he left on the table after agreeing to a one-year $5.3 million contract at the mid-level exception.

The Warriors will be hard-pressed to retain him, considering his value, which makes it a definite possibility that he could try and make his money elsewhere, benefitting from the cap room spike.
