The Washington Football Team is reportedly gearing up for the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft in a bid to land their future franchise quarterback. Head coach Ron Rivera and the team are reportedly willing to ship their assets in order to move up in the draft as they set their sights on possibly selecting North Dakota State University gunslinger Trey Lance.

Via The Athletic's Michael Lombardi on The GM Shuffle:

“I think Washington is going to be the next team to unload all their picks to try to get a QB,” Lombardi said. “I think they love Lance. I don’t think, I know Washington loves Lance. So, will they trade up to get Lance? That remains to be seen.”

Lance previously finished a three-year collegiate career with NDSU. As a redshirt freshman back in 2019, he made a name for himself as he amassed a total of 2,786 passing yards on 192 completions to go along with 28 touchdowns in 16 games played. The team's 2020 season was eventually canceled due to COVID-19 after a single game but Lance was able to do enough to create buzz ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Despite the swirling rumors, a deal has yet to be inked and nothing is set in stone as of the moment. In the event that the rumored move falls apart, Washington can still proceed with their “plan B” next season.

The Washington Football Team recently signed quarterback Taylor Heinicke to a two-year, $4.75 million contract after a gutsy performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round of last season's playoffs. They also acquired veteran gunslinger Ryan Fitzpatrick who had a solid campaign with the Miami Dolphins before he was relegated to the backseat in exchange for rookie Tua Tagovailoa.

Head coach Ron Rivera and the rest of the Washington Football Team are hoping that they can continue to build on their promising run last season as they look forward to potentially placing a young talent like Trey Lance under center moving forward. Fitzpatrick is a great placeholder for the time being, but he isn't a long term solution. Lance would provide that opportunity and hope.
