The Chicago White Sox have come out of the gates fast in the 2019-20 MLB offseason.

Chicago struck gold by inking marquee catcher Yasmani Grandal to a four-year, $70 million deal, then re-upped with first baseman Jose Abreu for three years and $50 million. The White Sox have been rumored to be pursuing starting pitcher Zack Wheeler.

However, Jon Morosi of MLB.com believes that the White Sox could land an even bigger fish in the starter's market: World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg.

Morosi called the White Sox a “dark horse” in the Strasburg sweepstakes:

Although the Nats might still be the favorites in the Strasburg sweepstakes, there's an increased sense in the industry that the race is more of a “wide-open scenario” than it initially seemed, according to MLB.com‘s Jon Paul Morosi.

Morosi names the White Sox as a dark-horse team that could step up to sign Strasburg. The club already added 31-year-old catcher Yasmani Grandal on a four-year deal and re-signed 32-year-old first baseman José Abreu to a three-year pact, which shows they are serious about contending sooner rather than later.

The White Sox are determined to spend big with some of their youngsters finally realizing their potential. They were in the running to sign Manny Machado last winter and also offered Bryce Harper a lucrative contract, though they ultimately came up empty.

This year could be different, however. With the likes of Yoan Moncada, Eloy Jimenez and Tim Anderson having big years and arm talent like Lucas Giolito, Michael Kopech and Dylan Cease ready to make a splash, the future is much brighter on the South Side.

The fact that Grandal–one of the best pitch framers and game-callers in baseball–is now in Chicago might also serve as an appeal for free-agent starters like Strasburg.
