Washington Wizards majority owner Ted Leonsis says he does not yet have a candidate list for the general manager position that opened when Ernie Grunfeld was fired earlier this week:

Grunfeld was relieved of his president of basketball operations duties with just four games remaining in the regular season. Tommy Sheppard, senior vice president of basketball operations, is currently handling Washington's basketball operations on an interim basis.

Leonsis is not pleased with the way his team performed this season. As of Wednesday, the Wizards are holding a 32-46 overall record, which is next to last in the Southeast Division standings:

“We did not meet our stated goals of qualifying for the playoffs this season and, despite playing with injuries to several key players, we have a culture of accountability and a responsibility of managing to positive outcomes,” Ted Leonsis said in an official statement.

“I wish to thank Ernie for his service to the Washington Wizards. He and his family have been great leaders in our community and have worked tirelessly to make us a top NBA franchise.”

Grunfeld, now 63 years of age, was with the Wizards for 16 seasons. In that span, the team recorded a 568-724 record and made eight appearances in the playoffs. However, Washington never made it past the second round, despite the fact that they've had several talented players on the roster.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Washington's GM vacancy is likely to attract several prospective candidates:

For now, it seems Leonsis will have to weigh his options.
