Sunday's WNBA game between the Indiana Fever and the New York Liberty was full of scoring. The Liberty got the 101-83 victory as Betnijah Laney led the way with a season-high 22 points. Jonquel Jones chipped in 18 for the Liberty, but the biggest story of the game was the 44-point first quarter for the Liberty.

They made the first nine shots of the quarter and set a WNBA record for the most points scored in a period in history. The previous mark was 42 set by the Chicago Sky in 2019, who ironically enough did it against the Liberty.

After the game, Fever head coach Christie Sides expressed frustration with her team (h/t ESPN).

“If this was a three-quarter game, we win by nine. You got to show me you're ready to play every night. Forty-four points is ridiculous.”

Victoria Vivians, who led the Fever with 16 points in the game, also admitted how tough it was: “The first quarter is tough, let someone score 44 points, it's tough to come back from that.”

The Liberty finished the first quarter shooting 15-of-18 with six three-pointers and were up by as much as 27 points in commanding fashion. The Liberty continue their impressive season, moving to 16-5 and in 2nd place behind just the Las Vegas Aces, the reigning champions.

On the other hand, the Fever dropped to 6-16, second-to-last place and just two games ahead of the Seattle Storm, so you can certainly understand why Sides was frustrated after giving up 44 points in one quarter and coming out on the wrong side of WNBA history.
