UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin sent a heartfelt message to the medical team when he gave them the award:
“They showed us that human life is more important than anything, a football match or anything else. They put things into perspective for all of us. They more than deserve this award. I didn’t have any single doubt about it.”
Christian Eriksen's collapse was due to a cardiac arrest that he suffered on the pitch, but the staff responded quickly to the situation and were able to resuscitate the Danish midfielder. It was an extremely scary scene on June 12th and if it wasn't for their heroics, he could've passed on. UEFA had to give them this award because no one else was worthy of it after such a selfless act.
Eriksen still hasn't been able to return to the pitch however with Inter Milan and they still don't exactly know why this happened in the first place. Until the cause is determined, he won't be able to play for the Serie A champions.
Congratulations to Simon Kjær and the medical staff for winning the UEFA President's Award.
