The Phoenix Suns had a disappointing playoff run and are primed to make moves this offseason. Phoenix was eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round after making a Finals run in the 2021 season.

The Suns have Devin Booker and Chris Paul as solidified stars but could rework the supporting cast. Deandre Ayton was expected to rise up as a reliable third star, but he did not meet expectations. Ayton had inconsistent minutes during the playoffs, and head coach Monty Williams' relationship seems shattered.

While Ayton is a solid player, both sides are ready to move on. However, the Suns need to make other moves besides moving Ayton. Adding more quality depth off the bench would be beneficial to maximize the talent around Booker and Paul.

With that said, here are three players the Suns must trade in the 2022 NBA offseason.

3 Players Suns Must Trade

3. Cameron Payne

Cameron Payne had a significant impact for the Suns in the 2021 season but struggled in the playoffs for Phoenix this season. Payne was unplayable at times as he is not a reliable defender and was inconsistent offensively.

He averaged 4.2 points and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 29.7 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from three.

Payne has two years left on his three-year $19 million deal, and Phoenix could use an upgrade. The Suns don't have time to hope players have bounce-back seasons. Paul can't play forever, and they need to maximize the years that the 37-year-old star has left.

Payne's contract is not that bad of a contract, making it possible for the Suns to move him. Even if they don't get a quality player to replace him out of the trade, they can free up cap space to find an upgrade in free agency.

2. Landry Shamet

Landry Shamet received an extension that will kick in at the start of next season back at the start of the season. He is on a four-year, $42.5 million deal, which is a tradeable contract.

Shamet had a decent regular season but did not perform well in the playoffs.

He averaged 4.3 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. Shamet shot 39.6 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from behind the arc in the postseason. Although he fits the prototype of a role player that the Suns need, he is simply not performing at a high enough level.

Phoenix has had no problem cruising through the regular season the last two seasons but has not been able to take home a championship. Trading a poor-performing playoff player is necessary if the Suns want to reach their ultimate goal of winning their first ring in franchise history.

1. Deandre Ayton

The most rumored and biggest domino to fall for the Suns will be doing a sign and trade deal involving Ayton. Ayton was selected by Phoenix with the first overall pick in 2018. He has shown flashes of being a star, but the relationship seems far gone and could cause issues in the locker room.

Ayton is a restricted free agent, which means the Suns can match any offer he gets. Pulling off a sign and trade makes sense, as Phoenix could get assets back in return rather than losing him for nothing.

Atlanta, Detroit, Toronto, and Portland have been linked as possible destinations for the 23-year-old big man.

Phoenix has many crucial decisions to make as it retools its roster. The Suns have the star power in Booker and Paul, with some quality role players. Improving the depth will be essential for the Suns to get back to the Finals.
