In a weak NFC East Division, the Washington Football Team needs to make some drastic moves if they want to win big. After making important changes to a young roster via trade and free agency, the organization is looking to recreate a somewhat successful 2020 season. As always, there are players who are expendable and could be on the move. With that being said, here are three players from WFT who could be traded prior to or during training camp.
Adam Humphries, Wide Receiver
During the 2020 season, star wide receiver Terry McLaurin found himself being the lone wideout who was able to produce key plays and rack up yards. Head coach Ron Rivera realized that it was time to find McLauren a sidekick. They lucked out with the signing of former Carolina Panthers speedster Curtis Samuel and nabbed former Tennessee Titans slot receiver Adam Humphries.
However, after drafting multiple ball-catchers in the NFL Draft, Humphries will have to fight hard to get his slot position secured. After some average seasons in Tampa Bay, injuries have plagued his stint in Tennessee. Now, it looks like some of the younger players will be hungry to get that slot position. Humphries still has some gas left in the tank, but he should go to another team who would use his abilities. Some teams that could make good use of his talents are the Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Charles Leno Jr., Tackle
Charles Leno Jr. vs. Samuel Cosmi will be one of the most interesting duels throughout or even prior to WFT training camp. Though Leno has shown that he can be a viable starter, he has also shown that he can be a liability when it comes to penalties and sacks allowed (allowed a total of 4.5 sacks and had seven penalties).
Then you got the newcomer Cosmi. His development and upside are too good to pass up on. This battle puts the Washington Football Team front office in a tough spot. Ultimately, the team should decide on the future, rather than keeping a part-time veteran. Signed only for one year at $5 million, trading Leno would not damage their cap space but could open up for extensions or signing future free agents. If he wants to be a guaranteed starter in the NFL, teams like the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers should be on his and the organization's radar.
Washington needs to embrace the future, and getting some draft capital for Leno can allow for that.
Landon Collins, Safety
Landon Collins' situation with the WFT is one of the trickiest decisions they must make before the season even starts. During his time with the New York Giants, many were calling him the future at the Safety position. When WFT gave him the 6 year, $84M deal, they believed that he could be the future of the once suspect secondary.
That all changed when a torn Achilles tendon sidelined him for the rest of 2020. Fully healed, Collins will have to prove to the organization that he is still on top of his game. Alas, this may not be the case. The gamble is too expensive for the Washington Football Team, who could gain almost $12M if they trade him. Though his contract may come in the way of completing a deal, a handful of organizations should find ways to take a risk on Collins.
The Washington Football Team finds itself in yet another predicament. However, Rivera and Co. should be able to figure it out just in time.
