Carson Wentz just finished his first season as the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. He was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2022 conditional first-round pick and a 2021 third-round pick in January of 2020. The Eagles turned these picks into two first-round picks, acquiring DeVonta Smith in 2021 and awaiting the 2022 NFL Draft.

Philadelphia made it to the playoffs this year, while the Colts fell short for the fifth time in seven seasons. It seems like the Eagles won that trade, and Indianapolis needs to recognize and correct their mistake before it's too much to handle. Here are the top three reasons why the Colts need to find a new franchise quarterback this offseason.

3. Key players are in their prime

Two players come to mind when I think of the base of the Colts, and neither one of them is Carson Wentz. Wide receiver Michael Pittman and running back Jonathan Taylor are arguably the most talented and most valuable players on the team. However, their potential is stunted right now due to the lack of talent within the pocket.

If the Colts can acquire one of the veteran quarterbacks available this offseason, the productivity of the entire Indianapolis offense would increase drastically. They need to find the right veteran quarterback to work with the young guys on offense and come up with a cohesive team before the 2022-2023 season begins. As time goes on, the need for a quarterback will only grow stronger, and the quality of the rest of the Colts' offense will only grow weaker.

2. Carson Wentz has proven time and time again to be a liability

Although it was only Wentz's first season with the Colts, it was his sixth season in the NFL. The 29-year-old has suffered seven different injuries since he was drafted by the Eagles in 2016.

Though most of his serious injuries were with the Eagles, Wentz has already suffered two injuries with the Colts. As he gets older, it has become obvious that the quarterback is extremely injury-prone. According to Draft Sharks, Wentz had an 87% chance of injury in 2021 and an 11.3% chance of injury in each game. These numbers are way too high for a starting quarterback, and the Colts need to address it immediately.

Along with injuries, Wentz has proven himself a liability for Indianapolis in terms of productivity. He was very inconsistent for the Colts this season

1. These kinds of opportunities don't come up every day

It isn't every day that star quarterbacks like Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers are on the table. About half of the league is on the lookout for a new quarterback and would do whatever it takes to get a veteran like them on their roster.

While Wentz has proven to be a liability for the Colts, he does have moments of potential that could work in their favor when it comes to trades. If the Colts can capitalize on this opportunity by trading Wentz and some draft picks, they could score a star player to lead them for years to come.
