The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver corps could be a bit short-handed come Week 1 against the rival Arizona Cardinals.

Second-year wide receiver Deebo Samuel and rookie first round pick and former Arizona State Sun Devils wideout Brandon Aiyuk did not practice on Wednesday, per Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee, which has put their respective statuses for Sunday afternoon’s regular season-opener in doubt.

Not only that, but 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett has already been ruled out of the upcoming NFC West clash due to a lingering hamstring injury, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Adding to the intrigue of the matter, Aiyuk’s status remains a bit less clear due to the fact that he is currently nursing a strained hamstring, which could hinder a particular player for longer than others. As a result, no timetable for a return has been attached to the rookie pass-catcher just yet as Aiyuk has yet to play a single down in the pros with there being no preseason this time around. Even though the severity of Aiyuk’s injury is better than initially expected, he originally suffered his setback on Aug. 24 and has yet to full recover almost three weeks later.

On the other hand, Samuel has been attempting to make his way back onto the field from a broken foot that he suffered earlier in the offseason. Because the team was originally slated to speak with his foot surgeon on Tuesday of this week, the fact that Samuel then missed practice on Wednesday could be a less than stellar sign for San Francisco and his status for Sunday’s matchup against the Cardinals.
