When Roger Craig watches New York Jets rookie running back Breece Hall play, he’s reminded of a certain former NFL star.

Himself.

“He has the tools and I like his style of play,” Craig told ESPN’s Rich Cimini. “Breece runs the ball, he catches out of the backfield, he blocks. He does everything, like me. I really like seeing that. That means he’s being a team guy, doing whatever it takes to win.”

Craig didn’t stop there with his praise of Hall.

“I can see him doing 1,000-1,000 in the pros, 1,000 yards running and 1,000 yards catching balls,” he said.

That’s a tall order for the second-round pick from Iowa State. Craig is one of only three NFL running backs to have 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season, along with Marshall Faulk and Christian McCaffrey.

But then again, perhaps Craig is a bit biased.

Hall is his younger cousin after all. “My cousin reminds me of myself,” Craig said.

Family relationships aside, Hall does have a bright future in the NFL. He was a First Team All-American in 2021 and the first running back selected in the 2022 NFL Draft.

In three years at Iowa State, Hall was an absolute workhorse. He rushed for 3,941 yards on 718 carries (5.5 yards per attempt). He caught 82 passes for 734 yards. And he scored 56 touchdowns, 50 on the ground, including 41 the past two seasons.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas called Hall a “home run threat.”

The durable and explosive running back is built like a tank, 6-foot-1, 220 pounds. That’s not dissimilar to Craig, who was 6-foot, 222 pounds during his playing days.

Craig helped the San Francisco 49ers win the Super Bowl three times and was AP Offensive Player of the Year in 1988, when he produced 2,036 yards from scrimmage. He rushed for 8,189 yards and had 4,911 receiving yards in the NFL.

Hall would love to replicate those numbers and surely has the confidence to do so.

But the plan is for Hall to split duties in the backfield this season with second-year pro Michael Carter. Although he missed three games while injured, Carter led the Jets with 639 yards on 147 carries as a rookie in 2021.

If you think that’s going to be a problem for the two youngsters, think again.

“It was a blessing and meant a lot that Michael Carter texted me immediately (after Hall was selected in the second round), showing love to me,” Hall said. “Some other people might be too prideful to do that or see me as a threat. I’m excited to get in and learn from him and be a counterpart to his game.”

Hall is one more weapon at second-year quarterback Zach Wilson’s disposal this season. Could greatness be part of the equation for Hall?

Roger Craig surely thinks so.

“He’s the man.”
