It has long been rumored that Jimmy Garoppolo will be traded in the offseason. Even before the San Francisco 49ers were eliminated in the NFC Championship Game, the general consensus was that Jimmy G is done in the Bay Area. The QB's emotional post-game presser after their final game only added fuel to those rumors.

However, other franchises might need to pump the brakes on their Jimmy Garoppolo fantasies. Adam Schefter, in a interview with Ari Meirov on YouTube, dropped some interesting tidbits about the 49ers' chances of trading for Jimmy G.

In the sitdown, Schefter emphasized the fact that Trey Lance, the 49ers' prized QB prospect, is still a work-in-progress. He rationalized that it's possible for San Francisco to keep Garoppolo for one more year and let Lance learn in the background. Schefter notes that Lance is relatively inexperienced even by rookie standards, and the team has a pretty competitive roster.

However, Schefter did not shut down the possibility that Garropolo gets traded, especially if the 49ers get a substantial return for their QB.

“It still absolutely is on the table that he could be moved and I think he believes he's going to be moved. I'm just giving you the other side that I don't think it's a lock he's going to be traded. He very well might. But it's not a lock.”

This offseason will be a pivotal period for the 49ers. Will they compete for one more year with Garropolo under center, or does the franchise think Lance is ready to take the reins? How the franchise manages this situation will decide the future of the team for a long time.
