The San Francisco 49ers square off with the New York Jets in a Week 2 battle. However, it appears withe 49ers will be doing so without the services of one of their best defenders.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on Twitter, superstar pass rusher Dee Ford  has officially been ruled out for Week 2 due to a neck injury.

Ford joined the 49ers before the 2019 season. And upon entering the franchise, there was a lot of buzz about just how useful the superstar could be to the defense. So far, his time with the team has been marred with injuries though.

After racking up career-highs in sacks (13) and forced fumbles (7) in 2018, Ford left the Kansas City Chiefs (the team that selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft).

The pass rusher switched over to San Francisco. And his first season with the team in 2019 definitely had a lot of potential. However, he ended up appearing in just 11 games. And due to that, his numbers were subdued to just 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Now he is already missing time in 2020. After recording just three tackles and no sacks or forced fumbles in Week 1, Ford is officially out for Week 2.

Obviously, this is a pretty hefty blow for the 49ers as they attempt to bounce back from a disappointing Week 1 loss to NFC West rivals the Arizona Cardinals. Now they will have to do so without one of their better pass rushers.

San Francisco's Week 2 opponents of the New York Jets are certainly still seen as the underdogs. After a dreadful Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills, many are writing them off as one of the worst teams in the league this year.
