The San Francisco 49ers selecting a quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft wasn't a surprise. The fact that it was North Dakota State's Trey Lance over Alabama's Mac Jones did catch a few off guard.

Regardless of who it was, the writing seemed on the wall for incumbent Niners QB Jimmy Garoppolo. But it appears as though Jimmy G doesn't want a frosty relationship with his potential replacement.

From a report by ESPN NFL reporter Nick Wagoner, GM John Lynch revealed that the two signal-callers have actually made contact:

“One thing that was really heartwarming to me, I heard last night that Jimmy reached out [to Lance],” general manager John Lynch said Friday night. “Trey was here today, and Trey told us that the first text he got was from Jimmy Garoppolo. So that's pretty special. I think it speaks to his class.”

It's unlikely that the 49ers would use a third overall pick on someone who's just going to be a backup forever. Nonetheless, Garoppolo seems like he's alright taking Lance under his wing for the time being.

This comes just after 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan had some eye-opening remarks regarding the future of last year's starting QB:

“I can’t guarantee that anybody in the world will be alive on Sunday, so I can’t guarantee who will be on our roster on Sunday,” Shanahan said.

Lance has a few question marks, but his upside is as high as any quarterback in the draft. It'll be interesting to see how Garoppolo and Lance interact throughout the season, but they're apparently off to a good start.
