The San Francisco 49ers played nearly perfect in 2019 and it still wasn't enough to prevail in the Super Bowl.

Following San Francisco's heartbreaking defeat in last season's Super Bowl, Kyle Shanahan admits that it will be a challenge for the 49ers to return to the Super Bowl in 2020:

“I didn’t want to go through this offseason. I want to get right back to where we left on in February and I know we have to go through a season and it’s going to be a lot harder to do — a lot harder,” Shanahan said, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports. “We can play a lot better and still not do what we did last time. That’s why all of our guys have to take this challenge and we got to take advantage of this offseason and we got to still find a way to take a step ahead of other people because everyone is chasing us right now and it hasn’t been that way.”

In his first two seasons as head coach, the 49ers compiled a combined record of 10-22. Therefore, San Francisco wasn't a team that had a target on their back by any means.

But then, in his third year at the helm in 2019, the 49ers secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC after posting a 13-3 record. Furthermore, they would advance to the Super Bowl, only to let a double-digit lead slip away in the fourth quarter.

Even though San Francisco fell short of winning the Super Bowl, they are still the team to beat in the NFC. Shanahan, who recently inked a new contract extension with the 49ers, understands that it's going to be a tall task for San Francisco to return to the same place they were this past February.
