Kyle Shanahan thrived as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in 2019 and he's getting rewarded for it. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers are giving Shanahan a new six-year contract through 2025.

Shanahan's new six-year contract will replace the previous contract that he signed with San Francisco in 2017. Similar to his new contract, Shanahan inked a six-year contract with the 49ers when he first took the job. Only this time around, with his new deal in place, Shanahan is now one of the five highest-paid head coaches in the NFL.

When Shanahan joined the 49ers in 2017, he was inheriting a franchise that combined for a 7-25 record in the previous two seasons under head coaches Chip Kelly and Jim Tomsula. Therefore, he was going to need time to shape the roster to his liking.

In his inaugural season in San Francisco, Shanahan was able to lead the team to a 6-10 record. Then, after an early-season injury to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers would post a dismal 4-12 record in 2018.

Nevertheless, Shanahan was finally able to field a healthy team in 2019 and helped San Francisco advance to their first Super Bowl since 2012. Even though he fell short of hoisting Lombardi Trophy, the future is bright for Shanahan. Seeing that they retained most of their roster from a season ago, the 49ers should be contenders again in 2020.

While the 49ers saw success in 2019, Shanahan is considered to be one of the best offensive play callers in the NFL. Now, with his new contract set in stone, he can say he's one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL.
