San Francisco 49ers wideout Marquise Goodwin may be getting a nice payday for winning Saturday's “40 yards of Gold” competition, but he'll have to wait a bit longer for the money.

Daniel Kaplan of TheAthletic.com reports that event organizers have instructed competitors not to try to cash their checks until Friday, July 5. Per Kaplan, that is the day the event’s pay-per-view figures are scheduled to come in. A total of $2 million in prizes was awarded out.

“In regards to the tweets about payouts, everyone received their checks,” co-organizer Charles Stewart told Kaplan via email. “We instructed them that they would be able to cash it by Friday.”

That the PPV money is involved in the payouts has caused a bit of a controversy around the checks given to players. Basically, did they promise money they were unsure come in via PPV rentals? The event's founders, Dr. Alijah Bradley and Stewart, always said they had secured investors to have money for payments, but never opted to identify who those were.

Event promoter Peter Kahn related the scenario to that of boxing, where athletes often take smaller cuts up front in return for a piece of the PPV take. But the fighters’ guarantees are separate from the PPV money.

Per Kaplan, one agent of a player who competed said he was very nervous and called the situation “a complete joke.”

San Francisco 49ers receiver Goodwin won the event and with it the promise of $1 million in prize money.
