49ers QB Nick Mullens was once in same workout with Eli Manning
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens enjoyed quite the career debut in Week 9. He now finds himself getting reacquainted with New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.
Mullens had attended the Manning Passing Academy prior to his senior year at Southern Miss. According to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, he still recalls what it was like to work out with him:
“To see how he moves in the pocket — he has very quick feet and is just very smooth,” Mullens said. “I definitely remember just sitting there and watching him throw. I took that all in.”
There is no question that a lot has happened since then. Nick Mullens went undrafted before signing with the 49ers. The addition paid off for San Francisco after their rash of injuries under center in the 2018 NFL season. Garoppolo has been ruled out for the year with a torn ACL. Meanwhile, backup CJ Beathard was unavailable to play last week due to a wrist injury. This opened the door for Mullens to make his stellar debut.
Meanwhile, Eli Manning has toiled away along with the rest of the Giants franchise over the past two seasons. His struggles this year have been one of the major headlines throughout the league. As a result, there is plenty of speculation regarding his status as the franchise quarterback moving forward. A win this weekend would certainly help quiet down the noise. Manning is likely hoping that Mullens did not learn too much from him at the camp.
Mullens was outstanding against a lackluster Oakland Raiders defense last week. However, the jury is still out on whether or not he is the real deal.
