The San Francisco 49ers made history on Sunday, but not exactly in a good way. San Francisco would fall to the Atlanta Falcons after quarterback Matt Ryan connected with Julio Jones on a five-yard touchdown pass to give the Falcons a 23-22 lead with just two seconds remaining.

With the loss, the 49ers became the first 10-plus win team to lose three or more games in the final 10 seconds since the 2000 Philadelphia Eagles.

That Eagles team would end the season 11-5 and lost in the divisional round to the New York Giants.

Other than the Falcons in Week 15, the 49ers would fall to the Seattle Seahawks in overtime in Week 10 and to the Baltimore Ravens three weeks later. In B-More, a Justin Tucker field goal with three seconds left clinched the game.

Sunday’s loss puts San Francisco at 11-3 so far on this season. Despite having one of the best records in the NFL, the 49ers are currently slotted as a wildcard team in the NFC. With a win today, the Seahawks also moved to 11-3 but have the tiebreaker over the 49ers in the NFC West,

With two games left on the schedule, the 49ers will have to face off against the Los Angeles Rams before ending the season in Seattle against the Seahawks with a division title possibly on the line.

Despite the three nail biter losses for San Francisco this season, the team ranks third in the NFL in terms of margin of victory with an average of 12.9 points. The good teams lose close. The 49ers are a good team.
