The San Francisco 49ers seem all but set to throw out Jimmy Garoppolo in the season opener as the team's starting quarterback. Of course, third overall pick Trey Lance had a small chip in his finger on his throwing hand and his Week 1 status had been up in the air.

Well, on Monday, Lance was at practice and gripping the football, but he was not yet throwing passes as he still recovers from the injury to his throwing hand. According to Cam Inman of The Mercury News, Lance did have the split removed, which is at least a little bit reassuring.

Trey Lance’s right index finger was out of a splint but he still wasn’t seen throwing any footballs Monday.”

If he makes his debut on Sunday remains to be seen, but the fact he wasn't yet throwing passes isn't a good sign for his trajectory this weekend.

On the other hand, the 49ers did have wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk back at practice as he has dealt with a hamstring injury for some time.

So, good news and semi-good news for Kyle Shanahan, if you want to call Lance's splint removal as good news. He was at least gripping the football, and the hope is he can return to practice and make his debut in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions.
