The San Francisco 49ers have a number of voids to fill on their roster this offseason. This could potentially mean good news for former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett.

Verrett has had a tough time staying healthy throughout his career. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, he will visit San Francisco.

The 49ers are hosting former Chargers first-round CB Jason Verrett on a visit that will include a physical, source said. He’s played 5 games in the past 3 seasons, but the talent is there and there is significant interest in him. The physical is critical.

The 49ers are certainly no strangers to giving injured veterans a chance to prove themselves. They did the same with cornerback Richard Sherman when they signed him despite coming off an Achilles injury. They are now hoping to find someone to play across from him moving forward.

When healthy, Verrett had been one of the best cornerbacks in the league. His best year came in 2015 when he registered 47 tackles, three interceptions, and 12 pass deflections en route to Pro Bowl honors. There is no question his skill set would make him an ideal fit in the 49ers secondary.

Unfortunately, it remains to be seen whether or not Verrett is even capable of handling the grind of an NFL season. He has not played significant time since 2016 and his track record with such significant injuries is not doing him any favors. Even if San Francisco is willing to take a chance, it will likely be on a contract that is heavily based on incentives.
