After placing the franchise tag on Dee Ford, the Kansas City Chiefs are expected to field trade offers for the linebacker. According to various insiders, the San Francisco 49ers are one of the teams expected to look into acquiring him.

According to a report from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport (via 247 Sports), the 49ers and Green Bay Packers are both interested parties that could try and make a move for Ford. It’s not known at this time what the Chiefs would like in return for Ford, but reports from earlier this week indicate that a possible second-round draft pick could get things done.

Ford has been a member of the Chiefs 3-4 defense for four years now, but is looking at possibly moving to defensive end under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. With that in mind, and given the massive contracts that the Chiefs will soon be doling out to players like Tyreek Hill, Patrick Mahomes, and Chris Jones, it makes sense for the Chiefs to try and move him.

Currently, Ford is projected to earn at least $15.4 million on his franchise tag, though he would like to sign a long-term deal. This note will likely be the determining factor on who acquires the linebacker, as the 49ers could possibly trade for him and sign him to a longer-term deal with the team.

After coming on slow during his first two seasons, Ford exploded as a dominant pass rusher for the Chiefs, tallying 58 tackles and 13 sacks in 2018. He was one of the best players at creating pressure for quarterbacks, something both the Packers and 49ers could desperately use.
