The San Francisco 49ers will kick of their 2019 NFL regular season by heading cross country to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Florida, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

That matchup with the Buccaneers will mark the first of two road games to start the season for the 49ers. They will then host the Pittsburgh Steelers in their home opener on Sept. 22.

This will also mark the second straight season that San Francisco will have played in Tampa Bay. This past year, the Bucs defeated the Niners by a score of 27-9 at Raymond James Stadium.

The 49ers are coming off of a 2018 campaign in which they won just four games and saw starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo go down with a torn ACL after just three contests.

However, there are higher expectations for San Francisco this coming season, as the Niners seem to be a team on the come-up in a tough NFC West division that also includes the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks.

As a result of the 49ers' struggles this past season, they will have the second overall pick in the NFL Draft later this month.

San Francisco has not made the playoffs since the 2013-14 campaign, when it made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game before falling to the Seahawks. The Niners also made it to the Super Bowl the preceding year, but lost to the Baltimore Ravens.

Outside of a short three-year run from 2011 through 2013, the 49ers have been very unsuccessful over the better part of the last two decades, as they have made the playoffs just those three times since 2003.
