The San Francisco 49ers didn't let Jason Verrett leave the Bay Area without a contract after all. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the talented, oft-injured defensive back has agreed to a one-year, $3.6 million deal with the 49ers.

The Houston Chronicle reported on Wednesday evening that Verrett's meeting with San Francisco was likely to end without an agreement in place between player and team. The five-year pro had even gone so far as to set up future meetings with the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs, visits that will obviously no longer take place.

Verrett, a first-round pick of the Chargers, was once one of the NFL’s most promising young defensive backs. He made the Pro Bowl during his first season as a full-time starter during his second year in the league, finishing with 47 tackles, two tackles for loss, three interceptions, and five passes defensed.

The injury bug bit one season later, though, when the TCU product tore his ACL in Week 4 and was placed on injured reserve. The Chargers exercised the option on Verrett’s contract for the 2017 season despite his injury, planning to start him at cornerback opposite Casey Hayward.

Disaster struck again just barely after the season kicked off, when Verrett felt nagging pain in his reconstructed knee and was again placed on injured reserve. His injury misfortune continued last season, which Verrett missed in its entirety after tearing his Achilles tendon on the first day of training camp.

San Francisco, 28th in points allowed last season, has been especially aggressive targeting defenders so far this offseason, trading for former Chiefs edge rusher Dee Ford and signing inside linebacker Kwon Alexander away from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
