The San Francisco 49ers have arguably the best tight end in the NFL in George Kittle. Still, the team is making sure they have enough depth behind Kittle on the roster. As the team continues training camp, San Francisco has signed tight end Erik Swoope, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Erik Swoope began his career with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted rookie out of Miami in 2014. Instead of playing college football like most players, Swoope played college basketball for the Hurricanes. While playing the power forward position, Swoope averaged five points and 2.7 rebounds in his senior season.

Throughout his career with the Colts, Erik Swoope spent most of his time on the team's practice squad. Though, he would put together the best season of his career in 2016 when he got a chance to start in four games. The former basketball player would tally 15 receptions for 297 yards and a touchdown in 2016.

The last time Erik Swoope played in an NFL game was during the 2018 season. After hauling in eight passes for 87 yards and a touchdown in 2018, Swoope would proceed to sign a one-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019. However, he would be released by the team before the preseason began.

Of course, the 49ers are set at tight end with Kittle manning the starting spot. Besides Kittle, the team also signed Jordan Reed this offseason and Ross Dwelley showed flashes of potential last season. Therefore, even though he's agreed to a deal with San Francisco, Erik Swoope's spot on the roster is far from guaranteed.
