The San Francisco 49ers saw a flurry of injuries in the early stages of the 2020 NFL season. They were dealt with huge blows as star defensive end Nick Bosa and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas are both ruled out for the remainder of the season after the pair sustained torn ACL injuries. The Niners front office quickly sought for band-aid solutions for the team's defensive line with the signing of free-agent defensive end Ziggy Ansah on a one-year deal, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
The Ghana native has spent some time in the league primarily with the Detroit Lions from 2013 to 2018 along with a pitstop with the Seattle Seahawks last season. He has also garnered a second-team All-Pro selection and a Pro Bowl appearance back in 2015. The 31-year old veteran amassed a total of 236 total tackles, 50.5 sacks, and 12 forced fumbles through 91 games played.
He will aim to fill the big shoes left by Bosa who was hailed as the 2019 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and emerged as a key cog in the team's Super Bowl run last season. Thomas was also a regular contributor in the 49ers' defensive line in previous seasons. Defensive end Dee Ford could also remain on the sideline due to a nagging back issue.
The squad also saw quarterback Jimmy Garappolo and tight end George Kittle nurse their own injuries but the two will most likely be back in their Week 3 matchup against the New York Giants. Meanwhile, the running back duo of Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman could be out for a longer time.
Despite the long list of injuries, the 49ers are still optimistic to put up a fight in their coming games. They will aim to pull through with another victory against a winless Giants side in Week 3.
