The San Francisco 49ers have signed journeyman wide receiver Max McCaffrey off the Green Bay Packers practice squad. A relatively interesting development, as there is a direct link with the player to the National Football League franchise.

Let's get some semantics out of the way first. It was first reported by Tom Pelissero, of the NFL Network, that the 49ers are signing wide receiver Max McCaffrey off the Packers practice squad.

As for the direct connection? For those unaware, McCaffrey is brother of Christian and son of Ed. Ed McCaffrey, for those unaware, was not only a good receiver for a long time in the NFL, but played football at Stanford with current 49ers general manager John Lynch.

Hooray nepotism!

Max McCaffrey has spent time with the Raiders, Packers and Saints as a practice squader, and was on the Jaguars active roster earlier this year.

He has one NFL catch, for four yards.

Here is a very random, but important kicker. For whatever reason, despite his overall rating being absolute trash, McCaffrey is a sneaky good talent in Madden (the video game). It is likely his better than average speed coupled with average-ish ratings in nearly every category, but for a not actually good player, he's pretty great in the video game.

You're welcome for the tip!
