The San Francisco 49ers made a surprise move ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft as they traded up to snag the third overall pick in hopes of potentially landing the team's future franchise quarterback. Former 49ers gunslinger Steve Young seems to be fond of BYU Cougars product Zach Wilson, based on what he's seen so far in the quarterback.

“I watch him and I want to watch more of him,” former 49ers (and BYU) quarterback Steve Young said of Wilson in a recent interview with this news organization. “There are few guys I want to watch more of. He’s a good young player. He’s a hard-working, good kid.”

Wilson previously concluded his junior year in BYU with a sensational season as he racked up 3,692 passing yards on 247 completions to go with 33 touchdowns through 12 games played for the Cougars.

After coming out with an impressive Pro Day, it seemed as if Wilson's stock got even higher leading up to the draft. In the event that he won't be available at the third pick, the 49ers still have a shot at landing Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields and North Dakota State playmaker Trey Lance who also concluded stellar campaigns in the amateur ranks.

The 49ers' decision to trade for the third overall pick could already foretell that current QB1 Jimmy Garoppolo is already on his way out of San Francisco. He previously finished the 2020 season with only 1,096 passing yards on 94 completions along with seven touchdowns in six appearances.

Certainly enough, the 49ers will have to get more from their starting quarterback if they want to return to being strong title contenders next season. In the end, the team's front office is hoping that they can snag the best prospect which can help turn things around as they aim for a bounce-back campaign in 2021.
