San Francisco 49ers legend Steve Young knows a thing or two about what it takes to win a Super Bowl. The Hall of Famer was vocal on what possibly held back the Niners from winning one of their own in the Jimmy Garoppolo era.

The 49ers icon thinks it was a matter of “trust”, or lack thereof, between the two most important men on the team in Jimmy G and head coach Kyle Shanahan. According to Young, Garoppolo has the talent to get it done but was “limited” by that lack of trust.

Via Josh Schrock of NBC Sports:

“When he joined the team, the team needed a quarterback to make some throws, and they didn’t have that,” Young told KNBR's “Tolbert, Krueger and Brooks” on Feb. 2. “Jimmy can make throws, he’s a starting quarterback in the league. How far he can go, I feel like in the end was limited by the trust between Kyle and Jimmy. It never got completely established like I wish it would have. In the end, both guys have to own that, and Jimmy does as well.”

While the Jimmy Garoppolo era in San Francisco seems all but over, Steve Young doesn't want to takeaway from what the young QB was able to accomplish.

“And so where does he fit in the pantheon of 49ers quarterbacks? We’ve had guys that couldn’t play,” Young said. “Guys that couldn’t lead or didn’t own the locker room. He’s accomplished a lot, and I don’t think we should diminish it. But we also have to recognize that whatever is missing, and however it didn’t get done, we all have to own that as well.”

Jimmy Garoppolo doesn't have the raw talent of a Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen, but he does have the leadership skills and formed relationships like a true QB should. Garoppolo's 49ers teammates respected him and the squad played all out for him, but it just wasn't enough in the end. Fare thee well, Jimmy G.
