A San Francisco 49ers fan has been placed in a medically induced coma following an altercation with a Los Angeles Rams supporter outside of SoFi stadium during last weekend's NFC Championship Game. According to reports, the suspect involved in the ugly incident has now been arrested.
According to ESPN, a 40-year-old 49ers fan named Daniel Luna was rushed to the hospital after getting into a fight with an unidentified man in a Rams jersey. The report also states that it was Luna who appeared to have started the altercation when he pushed the aforementioned Rams supporter from behind. Luna then walked away but was also pushed from behind and then punched in the mouth when he turned to face the Rams fan. Luna fell and hit his head on the ground, which is what caused his head injury.
The 49ers organization have already come out with an official statement to address this matter as they denounced the violent incident:
“What happened to Daniel Luna is reprehensible, and we strongly condemn all violence,” the 49ers said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. “We know local authorities in Los Angeles are conducting a full investigation and we're here to support them however we can.”
Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. has also spoken out about the incident and according to the city official, the 33-year-old man that was earlier arrested had subsequently been released on $30,000 bail. Butts also revealed in a press conference that the man was charged with assault. According to Butts, Luna had sustained a facial fracture and that he was placed in a medically induced coma to “prevent internal bleeding from swelling his brain.” His current condition has neither improved nor degraded.
“It looked like a small altercation that went very bad,” Butts described the incident. “From one punch and someone falling, hitting their head on the ground. It wasn't like you had people ganging up on somebody and beating them.”
For their part, officials of SoFi Stadium said in their statement that they are “aware and saddened by the incident” and are “working with law enforcement officials.” They are also expected to beef up security ahead of next week's Super Bowl matchup between the Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals.
