Trent Williams and Nick Bosa have battled each other early in San Francisco 49ers training camp, with the wily veteran getting the best of the young edge rusher in most circumstances. Despite having dominant practices himself, Williams had nothing but praise for the second-year defensive end.
“Nick, he’s better than I already thought he was, and I knew he was top three, four in the game,” Williams said, via Matt Maiocco of NBCSportsBayArea.com. “But just going up against him every day, seeing how smart he is, seeing how hard he works, and seeing just how seriously he takes the game, I honestly see his trajectory as being one of the best in the game. When it’s all said and done, when you say who’s the best pass-rusher, all-around D-end, I think Nick Bosa may be the first name that comes out of a lot of people’s mouth.”
As the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Bosa was expected to make an immediate impact on the 49ers' defense. After seeing him perform in 2019, it's safe to say he exceeded expectations as a first-year starter.
The former Buckeye would conclude his rookie season with nine sacks, 25 quarterback hits, a forced fumble, and an interception. To reward him for his efforts, the NFL named Bosa the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2019.
On the other hand, the 49ers are transitioning from having Joe Staley at left tackle to Williams this season. While Williams appears to be back in peak form, he is confident that Bosa can evolve into one of the best pass rushers in NFL history.
