The Christian Hackenberg era in Memphis is over. The Memphis Express, a member of the new upstart AAF league, have benched Hackenberg and replaced him with Zach Mettenberger, according to Jason Munz of The Memphis Commercial Appeal.

The former Penn State star received three starts for the Express, but Memphis coach Mike Singletary pulled the plug at halftime of his third game. Hackenberg, who was drafted by the Jets in the second round back in 2016, struggled mightily. Through two and a half games, Hackenberg had completed just 32 of 62 passes for 277 yards and three interceptions with no touchdowns.

That was enough for Singletary to inset Mettenberger into the lineup. Mettenberger, the former LSU quarterback who was drafted by the Titans in 2014, was an immediate upgrade. He tossed two touchdown passes in his one half of action, and Singletary officially named him the starter moving forward.

The Express are now 0-3 and falling behind quickly in the AAF standings. Looking for their first win in franchise history, they'll take on the San Diego Fleet this weekend.

Mettenberger actually has some NFL starting experience unlike Hackenberg, as he started 10 games for Tennessee from 2014-15. Mettenberger has the most NFL experience of any quarterback in the league, and it'll be interesting to see how he fares moving forward.

This could be the end of the line for Hackenberg, after he flamed out unceremoniously in the NFL. Despite investing a high draft pick on him, the Jets gave up after just two years, and he never appeared in a regular season game. He spent parts of the offseason with the Raiders and Eagles, and then ended up on the Bengals' practice squad. He was hoping to revitalize his career in the AAF, but it never panned out.

Mettenberger will now get his shot to prove he belongs back in the NFL.
