Emergency meeting! Among Us just shook up its gameplay by introducing not one but four new roles, alongside a slew of other updates. Fresh cosmetics also arrived through the Cosmicubes system. Here's a guide to all the changes that arrived on the November 9 patch.

Among Us Guide: New roles, Cosmicubes, and more updates

Among Us new roles and impressions

Among Us has no doubt taken over the internet, and especially did so during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the three years since the game's release, players had gotten used to acting as either of the two Among Us roles—Crewmates or Imposters. Good guys or bad guys. Simple, easy, straightforward.

Now though Among Us developers have decided to shake things up. And it did not just come as a third role to break up the dichotomy. Instead, four very unique roles just arrived in the game all at once, shocking long-time fans worldwide. Of these four, three fall under the Crewmates group—the Scientist, Engineer, and Guardian Angel. Meanwhile, the Shapeshifter belongs to the Impostor side of things.

Among Us already had inklings of being like a mafia game, but with these new roles, the dynamics of the game are all the more shaping up to be more reminiscent of mafia-style or werewolf games. Before, all the Crewmates basically had the same functions or abilities. They just differed in terms of appearance and individual tasks assigned per game. But these specialized roles could really change the way players approach the game.

For example, the Engineer role allows the Crewmate player to use vents whenever they please. That sounds all fine and dandy, and a great way to rotate around the map. But it might also mean that Impostors brand themselves as Engineers when they get caught venting. Or vice versa, the Engineer will have to defend themself from accusations if someone spots them accessing a vent.

Further adding to the confusion and chaos, the Impostors' Shapeshifter role lets them take on a disguise, appearing as any other Crewmate. You could cause all sorts of trouble behind the mask. Note, though, you will have to be careful when deciding to shapeshift as the transformation process itself is very obvious and easy to spot if other players are in the area.

Meanwhile, the Scientist has the ability to check the crew's vitals any any time. However, since the buff is battery-powered, you'll have to recharge by completing tasks. When used right, the tool can prove extremely useful. You could notice any suspicious goings-on around the map and potentially catch Impostors red-handed.

Finally, the Guardian Angel also brings a unique twist to Among Us. Once dead, the Guardian Angel can cast a shield and protect remaining Crewmates from danger, particularly if they are about to be one-hit-killed by an Impostor. Pull off this life-saving move at the right time, and the alive Crewmate would be able to know who their attempted killer was and perhaps call an Emergency Meeting to vote-kick the Impostors.

Among Us Cosmicubes overhauls in-game cosmetics

Among Us also deployed a new cosmetic system through Cosmicubes, elaborate branching cosmetic trees of themed items. Players can use various in-game currencies to unlock collectible items. Developers InnerSloth also added free and paid customization options like visors, name plates, hats, and pets.

Alongside the cosmetic storefront, Among Us introduced XP, beans, pods, and stars that players can earn as they work to complete a cosmicube. Playing the game grants you XP (quite straightforward) and you can level up and save progress. Players also get pods and beans. Beans serve as the free-to-play currency, which you can use to buy a cosmicube. Alternatively, you can spend real money in exchange for stars, using this premium currency for purchasing the cosmicube. But here's the catch, only the pods can unlock the cosmicube, thus actively encouraging continued playing of the game.

Among Us Controller changes

Besides the roles and cosmetics, the mechanics of the game have also changed depending on the device you use. The main action button no longer links to the vent action and the sabotage action.

To go through the vent, players need to press V on the keyboard or the Right Shoulder button on controllers. Meanwhile, to access the sabotage map, Impostors just need to open their own copy of the map. You can press the Tab key or the Left Trigger on controllers for quick access.

Finally, for players with a special role (the four that we just covered above), you can access the action via the F key or the Right Trigger. While these changes are relatively minor, long-time Among Us players may find that knowing these shortcuts would be key to optimizing your movements around the map.
