Shawn Machel Johnson was born on January 19, 1992, in Des Moines, Iowa, to parents Doug and Teri Johnson. At the age of 3 years old, her parents enrolled her in gymnastics class after they noticed her climbing cabinets and jumping off tables.
When she was 6 years old, she became a student of gymnastics coach Liang Chow when he opened a gymnastics school in West Des Moines. He then went on to Shawn Johnson when she became a competitive gymnast.
Shawn Johnson attended Valley High School and she was on the honor roll during her time there. She also maintained a more balanced lifestyle than typical female gymnasts as she limited her training to 25 hours per week compared to the more typical 40 hours.
In the spring of 2009, she left school and moved with her mother to Los Angeles, California. In 2010, she finished high school with a private tutor. Johnson enrolled at Vanderbilt University in 2013 but withdrew before classes officially began.
As for her gymnastics career, she competed in the Junior Olympics (U.S. Level 10) National Championships when she was 12 years old. She finished fourth in the all-around, first on beam, and second on floor.
Unfortunately, Johnson was not invited to the USA Gymnastics national team training camps when she was young. Liang Chow, her coach, then sent the National Team Coordinator a video of Johnson with the comment “I believe this kid will help the U.S. Team”. She was then eventually invited to join training camps.
Shawn Johnson qualified for the Junior International Elite on her first attempt. She then caught a lot of attention at the 2005 U.S. Classic where she placed third. Unfortunately, she fell from the beam on the first day of the 2005 U.S. National Championships — she finished tenth all-around.
In 2006, she added several new skills to her arsenal and she went on to win the 2006 U.S. Junior National All-Around Championship with a score higher than any of the senior elite competitors.
She started her senior career in 2007 and she continued to add new skills to her bag. In the 2007 Pan American Games, she won four gold medals in team, all-around, beam, and bars, and a silver on floor. On top of that, she also won the 2007 Visa U.S. National Championships.
At the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, Shawn Johnson represented the United States along with Nastia Liukin, Shayla Worley, Alicia Sacramone, Ivana Hong, and Samantha Peszek. She helped the U.S. team win the team, all-around, and event gold.
In 2008, Shawn Johnson won the all-around at the Olympic Trials in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ahead of US teammate Nastia Liukin. Due to their placements, both Johnson and Liukin were named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic gymnastics team immediately after the trials.
At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Shawn Johnson competed in all four events during the team competition as the United States won the silver medal. She also won the silver medal in the individual all-around competition. Her US teammate, Nastia Liukin, won the gold medal, making it the first time the United State Women’s Gymnastics team took home both silver and gold medals in the individual all-around competition.
Johnson also won the silver medal in floor exercise. She also won a gold medal on the balance beam apparatus, making her the 2nd American to win gold on balance beam after Shannon Miller in 1996.
In January 2010, Shawn Johnson tore her left ACL while she was skiing. She immediately had reconstructive surgery the following week. She then announced her return to gymnastics in May 2010 with the goal of qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team.
In February 2011, she became an official member of the USA Senior National Team once again which allowed her to participate in international competitions. Later that year, she was named a non-traveling alternate to the 2011 USA Women’s World Championships Team.
In October 2011, she was named to the US team for the 2011 Pan American Games. She won a gold medal in the team competition and a silver medal for her performance on the uneven bars.
Unfortunately, problems caused by her left knee persisted and she was forced to end her comeback for the 2012 Olympic team and retire, which she announced on June 3, 2012.
