Angels fans held their breath when outfielder Mike Trout was hit in the hand on Sunday. Fortunately, the 81 MPH slider did not cause too much damage to the All-Star outfielder, who missed most of last season due to injury. He is currently listed as day-to-day after X-rays came back negative.

Mike Trout commented on the situation and provided a reasoning as to why he was hit in the hand by an off-speed pitch.

“Like a normal day, I probably just turn like this (turning his left shoulder in) and just get hit.”

Trout continued.

“Could have hit me anywhere else, but hit me in my hand.”

Angels manager Joe Maddon gave an explanation for pulling Trout out of the game following the hit by pitch.

“I just decided, let’s get it looked at, get some ice on it and get you back sooner.”

Maddon expects to sit Trout for Monday's game in Houston. Although playing the division-rival Astros is important, we are still only in April. Keeping Mike Trout healthy for the long-term is what matters right now.

It is safe to say that the Angels caught a break. They can't afford to be without the future Hall-of-Famer for an extended period of time again like last year. The Angels currently sit in first place in the AL West with a 6-4 record. They will look to take care of business against the second place Houston Astros on Monday evening without Mike Trout. It should be noted that Trout could potentially be available for a pinch-hitting appearance if the opportunity presents itself.
