The last thing the Los Angeles Angels would want to see is Shohei Ohtani getting hurt, but that's exactly the painful sight they all have to stomach Saturday night. Taking an at-bat opposite San Diego Padres lefty Ryan Weathers in the bottom of the opening inning, Ohtani got drilled in his right hand by a 93 MPH heater.

And that sound you just heard is the collected “oof” of every Angels fan from around the world. If anything, it did not appear that Weathers hit Ohtani on purpose. It was after all just the first inning of the contest plus Ohtani does not come across as someone anyone would get gratification out of by plunking. Ohtani is a great pitcher and hitter at the same time, but he's also an all-around great guy. Why would anyone intentionally send a fastball straight to his hand?

Angels fans can breathe a sigh of relief and unclenched their fists now. They can now stop marching towards Weathers' home with their torches, as Ohtani seems all right, via Rhett Bollinger.

Shohei Ohtani is standing at the top of the dugout with a batting helmet on. So it looks like he's OK and will stay in the game after being hit on his right hand in his first at-bat.

This is one of those instances that begs to ask the question of whether it's totally worth it to continue playing Ohtani as a full-time pitcher/hitter. Whichever side you are in, it's undeniable that he's been delivering elite numbers as a starter and hitter.

Ohtani entered the game as the majors' leading home-run hitter with 41 jacks to go with a .266 batting average. Moreover, he has a 19-8 record and 3.00 ERA in 19 starts.
