Anthony Smith and Ryan Spann are set to meet on September 18 in the main event. The two light heavyweights will be hoping to continue climbing the division's rankings and get closer to a title shot.

The UFC released a promo for the main event on the latest UFC broadcast. Spann was notably very angry and seemed to not like Smith at all.

“I didn’t see it live, but I had enough people reach out that I was like, ‘Oh, maybe I’ll go back and watch and see what this is about.’ I don’t know. What a nerd. I just laughed at it the whole time,” Smith said about the promo on The MMA Hour (transcription by Shaun Al-Shatti.) “Like, what are you so mad about?

“It sounds like a bunch of sh*t that’s bothering him, that he’s got to convince himself. And then at the end, he hit me with the old ‘Watchmen’ quote, when Rorschach was in prison: ‘I’m not locked in here with you, you’re locked in here with me.’ Get out of here, you fucking dork. Listen, I don’t want to take this too deep because there’s no beef there. I definitely don’t have his respect, which is fine. I will next Saturday night, I promise you that.”

It's interesting as the promo was made more interesting by Spann but also caught a lot of people by surprise, including Anthony Smith. Promos serve their purpose in getting people excited for fights but in this case, it got people excited and also confused.

Smith dismissed any indication of beef and called Spann a ‘nerd.' Smith's been around the fight game enough that promos like that don't phase him.

He was asked about it because it surprised the MMA community. Spann isn't normally cutting promos and angrily going after his opponents.

The two are set to meet on September 18 at the UFC Apex.
