Austria had its best performance ever in the 2021 European Championships. Remarkably, it made it to the Round of 16 before Italy eliminated it. The Austrians went 2-2 over four matches. Overall, they had made it to the Group Stage in two prior appearances. It will be their fourth appearance ever in the Euros.
France has one of the most prestigious histories in the world. Amazingly, they have won two European Championships. But their last appearance left a sour taste in many mouths as they made it to the Round of 16 before faltering in 2020. Furthermore, their loss in the finals in 2016 also left a bitter taste in their mouths. The French had made it to the quarterfinals twice in the three tournaments before. Significantly, France last won the European Championship in 2000.
The countries have played six times. France has won four times, Austria once, and the other was a draw. Recently, the teams played a tight battle, with France winning 2-1.

Why Austria Will Win
Ralf Rangnick faces a tough task as he attempts to lead this club to a win over a challenging team. Now, he hopes to start with a goalkeeper and a defense with some question marks.
Goalkeeper Heinz Lindner will need to be more consistent. Yet, he has not had much work in as he played two matches for the Austrians. All eyes will be on how he handles the pressure.
Stefan Posch leads this defense with 23 goals allowed, 14 clean sheets, and 18 interceptions for the club. Additionally, he won 128 ground duels and blocked eight shots. Stefan Lainer of Borussia Monchengladbach had 11 tackles in his last match. Sadly, Austria will not have captain David Alaba as he recovers from an injury.
Article Continues BelowThe midfielders will need to do well. Unfortunately, Nicolas Seiwald of RB Leipzig did not score over eight qualifiers. Conversely, Florian Grillitch of Hoffenheim had one goal and six assists over 30 matches. Konrad Laimer of Bayern Munich generated two goals over six qualifiers.
The forward group is solid but not spectacular. Ultimately, Marco Arnatovic of Inter Milan had five goals and three assists over 27 matches for the club and two goals and four assists over the qualifiers. Michael Gregoritsch of SC Freiburg had seven goals and four assists over 32 matches. Likewise, he scored four goals over six qualifiers.
Austria will win this matchup if its defense prevents France from having too many shooting lanes. Then, it needs to win its duels and find a way to score.
Why France Will Win
Didier Deschamp is a great manager who will look to lead the French to victory after they lost the World Cup. Therefore, he will tout some of the best players in the world, including a world-class goalkeeper.
Mike Maignan had a tough season as he dealt with a thigh injury. Regardless, he is still one of the best goalkeepers and will be ready for the Euros. But if he isn't, Alphonse Areola of West Ham is an adequate backup.
The defense has some questions. First, William Saliba of Arsenal will need to improve. Saliba has Ibrahima Konate of Liverpool to help on the right side of the pitch. But who will be the full-backs? Theo Hernandez of AC Milan will be on one side. Unfortunately, his brother Lucas tore his ACL. It means that Jonathan Clauss may be the next-best option.
The midfielders are always solid. Thus, look for Adrien Rabiot of Juventus did well with five goals and three assists over 31 matches for the club. Rabiot also had one goal and one assist in the qualifiers. Meanwhile, Aurélien Tchouaméni of Real Madrid had three goals and one assist for the club and one goal and one assist over six qualifiers. Antoine Griezmann of Athletico Madrid had 16 goals and six assists over 33 matches, with one goal and one assist over eight qualifiers.
Olivier Giroud, 37, may be on his last leg. However, he scored 15 goals and eight assists in 35 matches and three goals and one assist in eight qualifiers. Kylian Mbappe is one of the best in the world and continued to show why, with eight goals in six qualifiers. Remember, he also had eight goals and two assists in the 2022 World Cup.
France will win this match if Giroud and Mbappe can continue playing at a high level. They also need their elite defense to rise to the occasion and set up opportunities.
Final Austria-France Prediction & Pick
Austria has had a nice journey to get here. Unfortunately, they are in the same group as France. The French are not happy after falling short in the 2022 World Cup. Moreover, they have not done anything in the Euros in 24 years. Expect France to get off to a good start as they are motivated to come out strong in this one and win this match to start the 2024 Euros.
