Axie Infinity has become one of the prime models of NFT gaming today. With players gaining crypto coins SLP and AXS simply from playing a game, Axie Infinity has also become very popular. But just like any other live-service game, Sky Mavis updates it now and then with new updates and seasons. Also, just like any cryptocurrency with live mining, SLP and AXS are not immune to halving. Let's take a look at the highlights of the recently-released Axie Infinity Season 18.

Axie Infinity Season 18 mining halves SLP and AXS

Perhaps the most important and most impactful change in Axie Infinity Season 18 is how much SLP and AXS players earn in the game. Just like every cryptocurrency, mining rates are halved after passing a critical point. This is done to manage the supply of crypto coins, preventing an infinite quantity of the coins, which could end up devaluing them. In Axie Infinity, players earn SLP through daily quests, single-player adventures, and winning PvP matches in Arena.

Before the new season, players can earn 100 SLP through adventures daily and 50 SLP through daily quests. Players can earn more SLP by winning matches in the Arena. Sky Mavis halved these values in Season 18, which means players can now only earn a total of 75 SLP through quests and adventures.

However, things are looking better for PvP Arena players. The rewards for SLP have been scaled to favor higher ranking players. That gives more incentives for players to rise through the leaderboards of Axie Infinity Arena. The seasonal rewards for the top-ranking players have also been revamped. Now, the top 1,000 players will be rewarded. A total of 5,000,000 mAXS are at stake, which is equivalent to 5,000 AXS. At the current value of $40 per AXS, that translates to a seasonal prize pool of over $200,000. Here's to hoping that the value of AXS holds up until the end of the season.

Upcoming Changes in the Long-term for Future Seasons

Season 18 will be “50% longer” than the usual season, so talking about long-term prospects for the game might seem premature. Still, Sky Mavis decided to share what the future holds for Axie Infinity.

RECOMMENDED (Article Continues Below)

First off, Sky Mavis wants to launch “our own decentralized exchange to attract greater liquidity for our in-game resources.” This might mean online modules that will allow vendors to accept payments in AXS and SLP. In some areas, this is already practiced, but only through wallet-to-wallet transfers and not through Axie Infinity itself.

Secondly, Sky Mavis wants to introduce an “Axie sink,” a way for Axies to be disposed of. Again, as Axies can be seen as assets, the growing number of Axies can eventually lead to a drop in price for them. A way to dispose of Axies can help maintain the health of Axie Infinity in the long-term, and players reward for disposing of unwanted Axies, helping them develop better teams without consuming extra resources.

Finally, Sky Mavis plans to release “new features and Axie game modes that increase demand for Axies through access to new experiences and utility.” How these “new features” will shape up will still be subject to speculation for now.
