With only three games left on the schedule of the Cleveland Browns in the regular season, the chance of Baker Mayfield and company to sneak into the playoff picture has gotten smaller, especially after the team's heartbreaking 16-14 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders in front of Cleveland fans in Week 15.
For many, that matchup against the Raiders was sort of a must-win scenario for the Browns, considering who was waiting in Week 16 for Cleveland, which is no other than Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, no less. The Browns could have secured the top spot in the AFC North with a win over the Raiders but were instead left wallowing in the bottom of the division with a 7-7 record. Mayfield was not around, though, in the Raiders game as he was ruled out after landing on the COVID-19 list. But Mayfield has now been activated from that list ahead of Saturday's crucial showdown with the Packers, hence giving the former Oklahoma Sooners a chance to play in arguably the most important Browns game of the season.
A loss to the Packers could be catastrophic for the Browns' chances to make the playoffs. The Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens are facing off on Sunday, which means that at least one of those teams could end up with nine wins by the end of Week 16 potentially a significant lead over the Browns for the division title.
Baker Mayfield's 2021 campaign has been up and down, and it lacks something positive that Browns fans could remember for a long time. On the year, Mayfield has passed for 2,603 yards and 13 touchdowns with seven interceptions. The Browns have been so dependent on their rushing attack that is bannered by the duo of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, but with the latter still on the COVID-19 list, the expectations for Baker Mayfield to step up and outplay Aaron Rodgers has gotten more intense. Aaron Rodgers is always going to be tough to one up, but it's also for the same reason by Baker Mayfield is sitting on a fantastic opportunity to pull off something Cleveland fans will remember for a long time.
Beating Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau Field with essentially the Browns' season on the line is, to say the least, a potentially career-defining moment for Baker Mayfield in Cleveland, regardless of how the season unravels for the team.
