Lionel Messi and FC Barcelona are currently finding themselves in a shaky situation as they settled for a 1-1 draw when they hosted Cadiz CF on Sunday. Barca head coach Ronald Koeman and his men failed to capitalize on the golden opportunity to further climb up the standings when top-seeded Atletico Madrid already suffered a 2-0 defeat against Levante on Saturday.

After their draw against Cadiz, Barca is currently trailing behind by eight points to Atletico Madrid that is currently sitting atop the standings with a total of 55 points.

“This hurts a lot because after Atletico's defeat we had the chance to get right back in the race,” Barca defender Gerard Pique said via ESPN.

“We had loads of chances, they had hardly any so to concede a late goal like that is difficult to swallow. Given the state of mind we went into the game today, we really had to get the three points.”

On the field, Lionel Messi lifted his team to an early 1-0 lead by way of a penalty scored in the 32nd mark of the match. Barca looked well on their way to a victory before Cadiz forward Ruben Sobrino was tripped by center-back Clement Lenglet who was awarded a penalty.

Cadiz midfielder Alex Fernandez then nailed the game-tying goal for his team at the 89th minute to dampen Barcelona's hopes of winning the La Liga title. The Argentine star in Messi also served as the lone bright spot for the team in their recent 4-1 loss against Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League.

FC Barcelona is currently sitting in third place of the standings with 47 points and will aim to bounce back when they host a struggling Elche CF side on Wednesday.
