A Barcelona high-up stressed that a transfer swoop for Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland is still far from reality.
As it endures the post-Lionel Messi era, Barcelona has reportedly short-listed a couple of big-name players who could fill the void left by the Argentine. Among them is Norwegian goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland.
Recent reports state that Barcelona has been gaining confidence in signing Haaland next summer but according to the club’s vice president Eduard Romeu, they still need to be very mindful of their financial situation before making any decision.
“It is very important that Barça recover the model that it should never have abandoned, with La Masia as the backbone of the team and the stars as accessories,” Romeu told Diario Sport.
Romeu went on the admit that contrary to what earlier reports say, the fact of the matter is that Barcelona is not capable of singing “the best players in the world” anytime soon.
“I have to exercise prudence: we won’t be able to sign the best players in the world for two years,” he pointed out.
“Now we have other priorities: lower salaries and bring them to market price,” he added. “This is the handicap that we have compared to the other clubs.”
Haaland is widely considered as Barcelona’s top priority signing next year.
Though a move for the striker is a bit far-fetched at the moment, the Catalans see “a glimmer of hope” as they are expected to receive financial support in making the transfer possible, per AS.
