For the first time since the release of Battlefield: Bad Company, a Battlefield game will be released without a single-player campaign. Similar to the original Battlefield 1942 game, the first in the series, Battlefield 2042 will not have a single-player mode. It will be entirely played in multiplayer, just like the originals. However, this doesn't mean that Battlefield 2042 will not have any story or narrative. For those of you who enjoy stories, EA DICE's latest game in the series will still have that – but not in the way you expect.

Battlefield 2042 will have Fortnite-like storytelling through progressive narrative between seasons

Battlefield 2042 developers DICE revealed alongside the game's first official trailer that it will not have a single-player campaign. But this doesn't mean that the game will just be all explosions and killing. DICE says that Battlefield 2042 will still have a story – it will just be told and unfolded throughout multiple seasons.

This approach reminds us of Fortnite. Epic Games' hit battle royale game has been telling its story for the course of multiple seasons. For example, in its latest Chapter 2 Season 7 narrative, the primal and prehistoric setting of Battle Royale Island has been invaded by aliens. Don't ask us why, though.

That being said, Battlefield 2042 might end up changing the landscape for online multiplayer games altogether. One of the reasons why DICE decided to let go of a single-player experience was so that they can focus on developing what they're good at – fantastic multiplayer gameplay. And Battlefield 2042 will have them in spades – along with the promise of allowing up to 128 players in one game lobby for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and on PC. DICE has revealed three game modes so far: All-Out Warfare ConquestAll-Out Warfare Breakthrough, and Hazard Zone. How these three multiplayer modes will weave together a story is something we can't wait to see.

Battlefield 2042 comes out on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on October 22, 2021.
