Ever since Dick Butkus got verified on Twitter, the Chicago Bears legend has been on a social media spree. As has often been the case with his tweets, Butkus was back on Monday to take a friendly jab at the Green Bay Packers. The Packers made some changes to the coaching staff this week, including naming a new offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Well, the latter of the two positions was filled by none other than Dick Butkus' nephew, Luke, prompting the 79-year-old to congratulate his family member while simultaneously throwing shade at his former rivals.
shout out to my nephew luke the new o line coach for the packers
so great to see you moving up with an expansion team— Dick Butkus (@thedickbutkus) January 31, 2022
Butkus of course was genuine with his congratulatory comments, but couldn't help but throw in a diss of the Packers, calling the organization an “expansion team” in his latest tweet. While he is clearly extremely proud of his nephew for his accomplishment as a coach, there's no hiding that Butkus would prefer Luke to be working in Chicago.
Article Continues BelowLuke Butkus played college football at Illinois but never quite panned out in the NFL, though he's had a more successful go in pro football as a coach. His first coaching opportunity came as a graduate assistant for the University of Oregon from 2005-06. He joined the Bears in 2007 as an assistant offensive line coach but was fired from his role ahead of the 2010 season.
He's since held stints with the Seattle Seahawks, University of Illinois, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Green Bay Packers. He joined the Packers in 2019 as an assistant offensive line coach before earning his promotion this week.
While he may not be coaching for the Bears, his uncle Dick couldn't help but reach out to congratulate him via social media, at the expense of the Packers, of course.
