The Chicago Bears came away with a 31-24 Thursday night win over the Dallas Cowboys. However, they are coming out of it with a serious loss of starting linebacker Roquan Smith.

It’s a critical loss for the Bears as they continue their small chances of making the playoffs this season. The injury is even more devastating news to the Bears organization when taking into account that they’re already without one starting linebacker in Danny Trevathan.

The former first-round pick was injured when he made contact with Ezekiel Elliott at the goal line on the Cowboys’ 17-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown. It’s after one of his biggest games in his career when on Thanksgiving he came away with a career-high 15 tackles against the Detroit Lions.

Matt Nagy and the Bears already know how big of a loss that will be for them in the long run.

“It could be a big loss. The way that Roquan has been playing the last couple of weeks, he’s been flying around and making plays. You just love that confidence that he’s bringing to the defense.”

Chicago will be using the next man up with Kevin Pierre-Louis and are confident in the young man’s ability to play in Smith’s absence.

“The depth that [the front office] has created on their roster allows guys like Kevin Pierre-Louis to step up and make plays. You feel bad for Roquan, but we know we have guys that can fill in. It’s a good thing to have that depth.”

It’s a big loss for the Bears, but they will continue to do what they can without him.
