The Cincinnati Bengals surprisingly decided not to undergo any major changes despite a disappointing 2017 season. However, the same cannot be said for quarterback AJ McCarron.

McCarron had been stuck in football purgatory ever since he filed a grievance against the Bengals. After winning the decision, he is excited to finally test the waters of free agency, according to Jim Owczarski of The Enquirer:

“It's just a blessing,” he said. “I was going to be blessed either way because you're still in the league, you're still being able to play the game for a living, but it's just awesome just to be free now and to hopefully get that opportunity and be able to compete somewhere. That's all I've ever wanted. I'm just super excited. Just really excited that I get that opportunity now and I just can't wait to just showcase what I can do and show a team that I can lead a team and win ballgames.”

McCarron filed the grievance because the Bengals placed him on the non-football injury list prior to the 2014 season, keeping him from the required service time to become an unrestricted free agent. It is likely that he will be taking back some of his salary from that year as a result of the decision.

More importantly, it gives McCarron the chance to test free agency for the first time in his career as an unrestricted free agent. The timing could not be any better, as there are a number of quarterback-hungry teams that will be scouring the market for their next franchise signal-caller. However, McCarron's body of work is limited, so he may be looking for a team that is going to welcome some competition under center.
