Throughout much of his career, Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Carlos Dunlap has been one a centerpiece of the team's defense.

Dunlap extends his stay with the Bengals through at least the next four seasons after inking a three-year, $45 million extension with the team on Tuesday afternoon, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Dunlap recently voiced his desire to work out a long-term deal to remain with the Bengals, where he has spent the first eight years of his career. During that stretch, he established himself as a cornerstone of the defense as a reliable factor upfront on the defensive line. Prior to this deal, Dunlap was in the final year of his five-year, $39.3 million contract that had him on pace to hit the open market next offseason.

Dunlap currently ranks as the all-time franchise leader with 64.5 sacks and 16 forced fumbles. He has recorded at least 6.0 sacks in all but one of his first eight years in the league while earning a pair of Pro Bowl selections.

He has been very durable, playing in every game in each of the last five seasons while missing just 10 contests over his entire NFL tenure. Dunlap's consistent production has helped earn him this lucrative deal to keep him in the fold for the long haul alongside Pro Bowl defensive tackle Geno Atkins, who also inked a multi-year extension with Cincinnati on Tuesday.

This deal erases any possible distractions arising involving his contract situation. Cincinnati is hoping to turn their fortunes around after back-to-back disappointing campaigns of missing the playoffs altogether. With Atkins' and Dunlap's deals taken care off, the organization's focus can shift solely to the field of play.
