With the NFL Draft coming up, each franchise is making roster moves they feel best suit their team. The Cincinnati Bengals have a long way to go before becoming a playoff-caliber team again, and they made a recent move that has some Bengals fans scratching their heads.

After being with the team for eight seasons, the Bengals have parted ways with Giovani Bernard. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler says Cincinnati tried to find a trade for the running back, only to wind up releasing him after no deal could be worked out. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports Bernard had actually asked to be released after being asked to take a pay cut, which helps explain why there was no trade.

Bernard was a fan favorite that provided solid depth at the running back position. He is known to be a versatile weapon in the passing game. He ends his time with the Bengals after recording 3,697 rushing yards, 22 rushing touchdowns, 2,867 receiving yards, and 11 receiving touchdowns. The 29-year-old had been the longest-tenured running back with a team.

Bernard wasn't the most expensive player on the roster, but with Samaje Perine bursting on the scene after Joe Mixon's injury, the coaching staff has made it clear they'd rather move forward with Perine. With the money they gained after cutting Bernard, the front office could be making another signing before the NFL Draft.

The Bengals haven't done much to ensure the offensive line for Joe Burrow, so fans are speculating to see either a free-agent acquisition, a new rookie, or even both. Either way, it's likely the front office could have made that move without releasing Bernard.

Giovani Bernard hits the free-agent market for the first time in his career. At 29 years old, Bernard can still provide some solid depth in the backfield for any team in the league. Look for him to find a new home sooner rather than later.
