There were some strange things happening in Cincinnati back in the day. Former Bengals quarterback Jon Kitna told Ryen Russillo of The Ringer one of the team's receivers showed up to a game drunk. Apparently, said receiver had close to 200 yards receiving:

“There were some things that were hard to believe [with the Bengals],” Jon Kitna said, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “There was a time that I played a game with a guy that was drunk in the huddle. There was a time that a guy showed up late to a game. In the NFL, you need to be there two hours, two hours and 15 minutes ahead of time. And he showed up under an hour before the game’s start. Those are weird things, now. That’s tough. I’m not sure if the staff knew. But I think the guy was like — that was kind of his normal. I mean he was drunk and had close to 200 yards receiving now. So it was crazy.”

Kitna did not reveal the identity of the receiver. But, considering he played for the Bengals from 2001 to 2005, it might not be very difficult to ascertain the pass-catcher in question.

There are really only three realistic options in terms of guys who approached 200 yards receiving in a single game between 2001 and 2005.

Regardless, Jon Kitna certainly saw some strange things in Cincy. Perhaps that is not surprising. The Bengals had just eight wins in Kitna's first two seasons under center, including a woeful 2-14 mark in 2002.

Things got better after Marvin Lewis took over in 2003. The Bengals went 8-8 over the course of the next two seasons, then made the playoffs in 2005. But the incident, presumably in the pre-Lewis era, reflects the strangeness of that era in Bengals football.
