Creighton has had a wild week. The Bluejays led Xavier by 17 at halftime last Saturday but then got outscored by 27 points in the second half to lose at home. Lesser teams would have folded the tent in their next game on the road, but Creighton went into New England and upset Connecticut in a defensive battle, 59-55. The Jays won despite the fact that their excellent defensive big man, Ryan Kalkbrenner, suffered an ankle injury and was not available down the stretch. College basketball odds analysts will tell you that Creighton has been able to overachieve this season, given the youth and inexperience of this roster. The Creighton Seton Hall odds are focused only on one game, but the long-term outlook for the Jays is bright under coach Greg McDermott.
Seton Hall is coming off a badly-needed win over Georgetown in which Tray Jackson scored 21 big points to fend off the Hoyas. Seton Hall has drifted in Big East play. The Pirates defeated Connecticut but haven't managed to beat Villanova, Providence, Marquette, or the other top teams in the conference. Seton Hall owns a win over Texas which boosted its NCAA Tournament resume, but the Pirates are anything but a lock at this point. They have plenty of work to do. Why Creighton Could Cover the Spread
The Jays were able to win at Connecticut even with Ryan Kalkbrenner nursing an ankle injury in the second half. Kalkbrenner is questionable for this game. He might give it a go, but it remains to be seen how effective he will be. Nevertheless, the team's ability to win without Kalkbrenner is an encouraging sign heading into this contest. What should add to Creighton's optimism is that Seton Hall is not playing particularly well, having split a two-game series with St. John's and barely beating Georgetown in recent weeks. If Creighton plays more great defense in this game, the Jays will love their chances.
Why Seton Hall Could Cover the Spread
The Creighton team which was good enough to lead Xavier 36-19 at halftime one week ago is also bad enough to lose the second half 55-28 and fall to the Musketeers. With Kalkbrenner's status uncertain, Seton Hall should be able to break down the Creighton defense and create a style of play in which the Jays will have a hard time keeping pace.
Final Creighton-Seton Hall Prediction & Pick
The point spread is something to avoid. Creighton won as a nine-point road underdog at Connecticut earlier this week, but the Kalkbrenner injury throws the Jays' readiness for this game into question. The spread is a stay-away bet. The better bet is for more points to be scored if Kalkbrenner can't be effective on defense for Creighton. Seton Hall usually plays games in the 70s, so that's in the 140-point range.
